Masayo Kajimura : « Folding stories into water »

Masayo Kajimura est une artiste japonaise et allemande qui se consacre notamment à la vidéo, née à Berlin en 1976, qui vit et travaille à Berlin. Elle réalise des films expérimentaux,  des installations vidéos et des projets collaboratifs dans les domaines de la danse et de la musique. Ses compositions poétiques d’images rapprochent des nivaux de réalité ordinairement séparés. Des fragments de récit, des scènes et des souvenirs sont tissés en un mouvement à la fois temporel et spatial. Le déplacement de l’eau est un thème constant de son travail et la tactilité de ses images révèle un imaginaire qui replace la réalité dans un continuum plus vaste.

Depuis 2010, elle travaille au projet Aqua Ephemera qui traite l’eau sous diverses apparences, à partir de sa faculté de déplacement. En 2012, avec Maiko Date, chorégraphe et danseuse, elle a entrepris le projet de vidéo-danse Between Islands qui développe l’histoire d’un voyage sur l’océan, suivant des  modèles de déplacement qui intègrent leurs propres expériences de la migration. Dans cette conférence, Masayo Kajimura présente ses œuvres dans le contexte des événements récents au Japon, à propos de l’eau et de sa condition de membre de la « diaspora » qui a développé une relation spécifique à l’idée de traditions culturelles et de sa réinterprétation.

Masayo Kajimura (born1976 in Berlin/Germany) is a Japanese-German video artist who lives and works in Berlin. Masayo Kajimura makes experimental films, videoinstallations, and collaborative projects with dance and music. Her poetic and associative composition of video images has been described as folding layers of reality, bringing distant elements together. Fragments of stories, scenes, and memories are woven into a temporal and spatial movement. The migration of water is a continuous theme in her work, and the tactility of her images evokes an imagination that positions reality in a greater continuum.

Since 2010 she has been working on the ongoing project “AQUA EPHEMERA”, that deals with water in its different forms of appearance and its migrating quality. In 2012 she started the video dance project “between islands” with choreographer and dancer Maiko Date, where the two artists have been developing the story of an ocean journey along movement patterns, integrating their own experiences of migration. In this lecture, Masayo Kajimura will present her works against the backdrop of the current events in Japan, relating to the element of water, and positioning herself as a diasporic person, who has developed a specific relation to the idea of cultural traditions and its re-imagination.
